A tragic hit-and-run incident occurred on Thursday, April 18, along the Trans-Canada Highway near Green Road just outside of Duncan, claiming the life of a young woman who has been identified as a member of Cowichan Tribes’ Joe family. The victim, believed to be just 17 years old, met a devastating end in what can only be described as a senseless act.
Chief Cindy Daniels of Cowichan Tribes expressed her deepest condolences to the grieving Joe family, emphasizing the profound loss they have suffered. In a statement issued on Wednesday, April 24, Chief Daniels highlighted the importance of supporting the victim’s family and friends during this difficult time. She also stressed the need for enhanced pedestrian safety measures in the region to prevent such tragedies from reoccurring.
The RCMP is actively seeking the driver and the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run, which has been described as a grey 2011-2013 model Hyundai Elantra. Cpl. James Grandy, an RCMP spokesperson, indicated that the vehicle likely sustained significant damage to the front driver’s side during the incident. The authorities are urging anyone with information or dash-cam footage taken in the area between 9 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. on the night of the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation.
The incident prompted the closure of the highway between Beverly Street and Green Road in North Cowichan from 11:30 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. to facilitate police investigations. Emergency crews responded to the scene around 9:50 p.m. only to find the young woman tragically deceased. Detours were put in place to redirect motorists during the closure period.
