U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers made a significant bust last Sunday, seizing nearly 50 pounds of methamphetamine cleverly concealed within an ice chest full of dead fish. The agency revealed this startling discovery in a news release issued on Wednesday, shedding light on the elaborate smuggling attempt that was foiled at the Calexico West Port of Entry.
The incident unfolded around 8:39 p.m. local time at the Calexico West Port of Entry, situated along the U.S.-Mexico border between California and Mexicali. According to the news release, officers from the CBO San Diego field office intercepted a 34-year-old man driving a sedan through the SENTRI lane, triggering further scrutiny due to suspicious behaviour.
Upon closer inspection, officers decided to conduct a thorough search of the vehicle using the port’s imaging system. They soon noticed irregularities within an ice chest located in the trunk of the sedan. A K-9 unit was promptly deployed, and the trained canine alerted officers to the presence of narcotics concealed within the ice chest.
A meticulous search of the ice chest led to the discovery of 25 packages, collectively weighing a staggering 47 pounds. Subsequent testing confirmed the contents of the packages to be methamphetamine, a highly potent and dangerous illegal substance. The suspect was swiftly apprehended and handed over to Homeland Security Investigations for further interrogation, while the illicit narcotics and the vehicle were confiscated by CBP officers.
In response to this brazen smuggling attempt, Roque Caza, Calexico Area Port Director, commended the vigilant officers for their unwavering commitment to intercepting illicit drugs. He highlighted the relentless efforts of the CBP in combating the scourge of drug trafficking that has claimed countless lives.
This seizure was attributed to “Operation Apollo,” a comprehensive counter-fentanyl initiative launched by the CBP in October 2023 in southern California, before expanding to Arizona in April 2024. The operation focuses on intelligence gathering, forging partnerships, and leveraging resources from various law enforcement agencies to target and disrupt the trafficking of fentanyl and other dangerous substances into the United States.
The successful interception of nearly 50 pounds of methamphetamine concealed within an ice chest filled with dead fish underscores the dedication and expertise of CBP officers in safeguarding the nation’s borders from illicit activities. This latest seizure serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against drug smuggling and the crucial role played by law enforcement agencies in maintaining the safety and security of the community..
