Prayagraj, formerly known as Allahabad, a city steeped in history and culture, witnessed a shocking and tragic incident exactly a year ago. Former Member of Parliament and notorious mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad, along with his brother Ashraf, met their untimely demise at the hands of three assailants while being taken for a routine medical examination.
Despite a year having passed since the gruesome incident, the motive behind the chilling murders remains shrouded in mystery. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) tasked with unravelling the truth behind Atiq Ahmad and Ashraf’s deaths has diligently worked on the case. They have charged the three assailants, who were apprehended at the scene of the crime, and are currently incarcerated at Chitrakoot jail.
Police authorities have put forth the theory that the assailants, disguised as members of the media, carried out the attack in a bid to establish their notoriety in the underworld. The brazen attack, captured on video and circulated widely on social media platforms, shocked the nation.
The three assailants, identified as Lavlesh Tiwari, Sunny Purane, and Arun Kumar Maurya, hail from different regions and claim to have had no prior acquaintance before the fateful day of the murder. The police swiftly acted on the case, lodging an FIR against the trio under various sections of the law, including murder, attempt to murder, conspiracy, and forgery, among others.
Prayagraj’s police commissioner, Ramit Sharma, took charge and formed a dedicated Special Investigation Team (SIT) to delve deep into the intricacies of the case. The SIT’s relentless efforts culminated in the submission of a comprehensive charge sheet, comprising over 2,000 pages of evidence, witness statements, and scientific findings.
The investigation revealed that the assailants harboured criminal backgrounds and orchestrated the murders to gain notoriety and financial rewards. They utilized sophisticated firearms, allegedly provided by a Delhi-based gangster, for the heinous act.
In the aftermath of Atiq Ahmad’s demise, a series of events unfolded, with his family members and associates facing legal repercussions. Properties worth millions belonging to the deceased mafia don and his cohorts were seized. Additionally, cases were registered against Atiq’s sons, Ali and Umar, who are currently detained in separate correctional facilities.
Atiq Ahmad’s tyrannical rule of over four decades came to a tragic end, unearthing a web of deceit, extortion, and criminal activities conducted by his gang members. The sordid saga continues to unravel, shedding light on the dark underbelly of organized crime and corruption that once plagued Prayagraj and its environs..
