As the newly-appointed CEO of Starbucks Inc, Laxman Narasimhan joins 25 other Indian-origin individuals that are CEOs of S&P 500 Index companies. The S&P 500 index includes 500 leading companies that are listed on exchanges in the US and covers approximately 80% of the available market cap.

Data sourced from Bloomberg show that the 26 companies that have Indian-origin CEOs effectively constitute over 5% of the S&P 500 Index and 13% of its total market capitalisation.

Half of these are technology companies, five are from healthcare and two each are from real estate and consumer discretionary. The majority of the Indian-origin CEOs were born, raised, and graduated in India before moving to the US for their post-graduate studies and subsequent careers. Incidentally, two of these 26 CEOs are women.
