New Delhi Police Officers Arrested for Bribery in Fake Dowry Case
Four police officers, including a former Station House Officer (SHO) of Muradnagar police station, were arrested on Monday for allegedly soliciting a bribe of Rs 2 lakh to close a fake dowry case. The accused officers have been identified as Satish Kumar, the ex-SHO; Lalchand Kannaujia, the case’s investigating officer; Bhuvnesh Kumar, the second investigating officer; and head constable Vikash Kumar.
Background of the Incident
The incident came to light following a complaint filed by Raghupal Singh, a resident of Muzaffarnagar. In 2022, Singh’s son, Purshottam, an engineer in the merchant navy, was in discussions for a marriage proposal with a family from Muradnagar. However, the negotiations fell through, leading to the girl’s family lodging an FIR against Singh and his son under the Dowry Act in April 2022.
Despite the lack of evidence during the investigation, Constable Vikash Kumar allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from Raghupal Singh over a phone call to settle the case. When Singh tried to report the matter to superiors, Satish Kumar, Lalchand Kannaujia, and Bhuvnesh Kumar reportedly threatened him and even suggested fabricating charges against his son.
Legal Action and Investigations
After facing threats and warnings, Singh decided to file a complaint with the police, leading to the registration of an FIR nearly a year later. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for the rural zone, Vivek Yadav, confirmed that based on preliminary investigations, an FIR has been lodged against the four officers at the Muradnagar police station.
In response to questions about the delayed filing of the FIR, Yadav explained that Singh had initially reported inadequacies in the investigation. Following an initial probe, where Singh provided audio evidence of the bribery attempt, a formal complaint was filed on Saturday, resulting in the registration of the FIR on Sunday.
Ongoing Investigation
The DCP assured the public that the police are actively investigating the matter to ensure justice is served. The case has raised concerns about corruption within the police force and the misuse of power for personal gain.
