A tragic incident occurred on the evening of April 12, 2024, in Surrey, British Columbia, when a 23-year-old international student, Gursahib Singh Batth, became the victim of a fatal car crash. The Surrey RCMP officers rushed to the scene at the intersection of 61A Avenue and 144 Street after receiving reports of a collision involving multiple vehicles.
Upon their arrival, the officers found Mr. Batth, who had been struck by a Mercedes GLK 250 driven by an adult woman. Both the pedestrian and the driver were promptly taken to the hospital for medical attention, but sadly, Mr. Batth succumbed to his injuries. The preliminary investigation revealed that in addition to hitting the pedestrian, the Mercedes also collided with a Ford F150 that was stationary at a red light, causing it to overturn. Furthermore, a Porsche and Honda Civic, also waiting at the signal, sustained damages from the impact. Fortunately, the occupants of the other vehicles involved only suffered minor injuries.
The authorities are currently conducting a thorough investigation into the incident, with speed being considered a significant contributing factor. The driver of the Mercedes has been discharged from the hospital and is fully cooperating with the ongoing inquiry. Meanwhile, a GoFundMe campaign has been initiated to assist in repatriating Mr. Batth’s remains to his home country of India.
