In Muncie, Indiana, a 55-year-old man named James Himes was arrested on Sunday for allegedly stealing a car from a Shell gas station in south Muncie earlier this month. The incident, which occurred on April 7 at a gas station near the intersection of E. 29th St. and S Macedonia Ave, involved Himes reportedly dragging the owner of the stolen truck 30 to 50 feet as he fled the scene.
Court documents revealed that Himes was charged with one count of auto theft, a Level 5 felony, in connection with the reported theft. The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, had attempted to prevent Himes from stealing his truck by confronting him as he got into the driver’s seat. Despite the victim’s efforts, Himes managed to speed off in the stolen vehicle, causing the owner to be dragged along the road while holding onto the passenger’s side door.
The victim was subsequently taken to a local hospital for treatment, with officials indicating in the documents that he may have sustained a broken ankle during the incident. Deputies investigating the case obtained video footage from the Shell station, which helped in identifying Himes as the suspect. It was also revealed that Himes had a prior conviction for auto theft in Henry County and was currently on probation for the same offense.
Following his arrest by the Muncie Police Department, Himes was questioned by law enforcement officers. It was noted that he immediately requested a lawyer upon being confronted about the auto theft. Interestingly, officials mentioned that Himes was wearing the same shoes he had on during the theft when he was apprehended.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety and security of individuals at gas stations, highlighting the importance of remaining vigilant and cautious while in public places. The swift action taken by law enforcement in apprehending the suspect serves as a reminder that criminal activities will not be tolerated in the community. The victim’s recovery and the legal proceedings against Himes are ongoing, with further updates expected as the case unfolds..
