Three tragic deaths in Goldsboro, North Carolina have left the community reeling after a woman and two men were found dead within a span of just 48 hours. The Goldsboro Police Department has issued a warning to the public regarding the presence of “tainted drugs” in the area, citing a concerning increase in overdoses and fatalities linked to these substances.
In an official public service announcement shared on their Facebook page, the department highlighted the dangers posed by drugs such as heroin and meth that have been laced with potent additives like fentanyl. These adulterants significantly elevate the risk of overdose and death for individuals who consume them, prompting law enforcement to urge caution and vigilance among residents.
The alarming PSA follows a series of death investigations initiated by the Goldsboro police, all involving local residents, from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon. The first of these investigations began on Friday at approximately 5 p.m. when the body of 40-year-old Richard Scott Lane was discovered in a wooded area near the intersection of Interstate-795 North and W. Ash Street. As of now, authorities have not disclosed the cause or manner of Lane’s death.
Subsequently, a second death investigation unfolded on Saturday morning at around 8:20 a.m., following the discovery of another 40-year-old man, Billy Wayne Saunders, deceased inside a room at the Irish Inn located at 1104 Sunburst Drive. While initial findings suggest no foul play was involved, police have refrained from confirming whether Saunders’ death was drug-related.
Tragically, the third death investigation was prompted by the discovery of a woman’s body in a tent outdoors on Sunday afternoon. The deceased, identified as 34-year-old Shawnell Kearston Alves, was found behind an Ollie’s Bargain Outlet in Goldsboro. Although no signs of foul play were evident in Alves’ case, authorities have yet to establish a direct link to drug overdose as the cause of death.
The Goldsboro community remains on high alert following these successive tragedies, with law enforcement urging residents to exercise caution and avoid using drugs alone. The prevalence of tainted substances in the area has heightened concerns about the safety of drug users, underscoring the urgent need for preventive measures and access to life-saving interventions such as naloxone (Narcan)..
