Suspect in KLIA Shooting Had Tumultuous Relationship with Intended Target
SEPANG: In a shocking turn of events, it has been revealed that the suspect who shot a bodyguard at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 on Sunday (April 14) had a tumultuous relationship with his intended target, who happened to be his estranged wife going through a divorce, according to police sources.
Past Police Investigations
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain disclosed that the suspect, identified as Hafizul Harawi, had a history of police investigations dating back to 2016. Reports lodged against him included cases of criminal intimidation and theft, as well as impersonation of a public officer.
Incident Details
The victim, a personal bodyguard, had previously filed two reports for criminal intimidation against the suspect, with the latest incident occurring in December of last year. This led to the suspect’s arrest, however, further instructions were given by the deputy public prosecutor at the time, delaying the legal proceedings.
Attempted Murder
The violent incident unfolded in the arrival hall of KLIA Terminal 1 around 1.30am, when the suspect fired two shots, one of which struck the victim, causing severe injuries. The suspect then fled the scene, leaving chaos in his wake.
Motive Revealed
Investigations following the shooting revealed that the suspect had intended to target his wife, who was waiting for the arrival of an umrah group at the airport. The case is now being treated as an attempted murder under section 307 of the Penal Code and the Firearms Act 1960.
Security Concerns
The alarming incident has raised concerns about security at KLIA, prompting authorities to announce a review of safety measures at the airport to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
