An elderly woman’s sheer determination to survive a harrowing ordeal proved to be her saving grace one fateful night, as revealed by the prosecuting attorney handling the case. The incident in question involved the woman, identified as Christine Jenneiahn, who found herself in a life-threatening situation when a 39-year-old man, later identified as Derek Condon, forcibly entered her home in Bingham County, Idaho.
According to the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney of Bingham County, the tragic event unfolded in the early hours of March 13, at around 2 a.m., when Condon, disguised in a military jacket and a black ski mask, brandished a weapon and accosted Jenneiahn in her own home. The elderly woman, who was asleep at the time, was abruptly awoken by the intruder and subjected to a series of terrifying threats and acts of violence.
In a shocking turn of events, Condon allegedly struck Jenneiahn in the head, causing her to bleed, before restraining her to a chair in the living room. He proceeded to interrogate her about the location of her valuables and made menacing gestures with his firearm. Fearing for her life and that of her disabled son, who was also present in the house, Jenneiahn decided to take matters into her own hands.
Seizing an opportunity for self-preservation, Jenneiahn managed to retrieve a 357 magnum revolver from under her pillow and concealed it strategically within reach. When Condon momentarily left the room to search for the safes mentioned by Jenneiahn, she acted swiftly and decisively. In a bold move to protect herself and her loved ones, Jenneiahn drew her weapon and fired at Condon, striking him twice in the process.
The ensuing chaos saw Condon returning fire with his own weapon, inflicting multiple gunshot wounds on Jenneiahn before succumbing to his injuries in the nearby kitchen. Despite being gravely wounded and handcuffed, Jenneiahn summoned the strength to call for help approximately 10 hours later, when her son provided her with a phone. Responding deputies administered life-saving measures to Jenneiahn before she was rushed to safety.
Rylan Jolley, the Bingham County Prosecuting Attorney, hailed Jenneiahn’s actions as a remarkable display of courage and self-preservation, deeming the incident a clear case of self-defense and justifiable homicide under Idaho law. The evidence recovered from Jenneiahn’s home, including a broken window and a screwdriver left by the intruder, corroborated her harrowing account of the events that transpired that night. Condon’s vehicle, found near Jenneiahn’s car with incriminating footprints leading from it, further supported the narrative of a violent home invasion.
In a testament to Jenneiahn’s resilience and unwavering will to survive, Jolley commended her extraordinary feat of bravery in the face of imminent danger. The prosecuting attorney lauded Jenneiahn’s grit and determination, citing her sheer will to live as the driving force behind her miraculous escape from a potentially fatal encounter. The community of Bingham County stands in awe of Jenneiahn’s heroic actions, with many acknowledging her remarkable survival as nothing short of a miracle amidst a terrifying ordeal that tested her mettle to the core..
