A female auto driver faced a distressing incident of public humiliation at the Varkala helipad in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The incident unfolded as she endeavoured to make a living by operating an auto rickshaw in the area.
The 28-year-old woman, hailing from Ayroor, was subjected to insults and derogatory remarks by male auto drivers who questioned her right to drive an auto. Despite bringing the matter to the attention of the Varkala police station, no action was taken against the individuals responsible for her humiliation.
The helipad vicinity, a popular spot for tourists, became the site of a confrontation between local male auto drivers and the woman in question. They not only berated her but also prevented foreign tourists from availing her auto services. The victim, identified as Sajitha, had previously worked as a school teacher for 17 years. Unfortunately, she recently lost her job and is currently awaiting appointment orders from the LP School Teacher list.
Sajitha’s husband had ventured abroad three months ago in search of job opportunities but has yet to secure employment. Faced with the challenge of meeting household expenses for her three children, she took out a loan from a bank and purchased an electric auto under a government scheme. Despite commencing operations from her residence near the helipad, she failed to generate any profits from her auto-rickshaw business.
In light of the distressing incident, Sajitha has demanded legal action against the male auto drivers who publicly humiliated her. The lack of support and action from the authorities has left her feeling vulnerable and exposed to further mistreatment in her efforts to earn a livelihood.
The incident at the Varkala helipad serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by women in male-dominated professions and the importance of upholding their rights to work and earn a living without fear of discrimination or harassment..
