A police constable, identified as Prince Chima, found himself in hot water after allegedly brandishing an AK-47 rifle in a threatening manner towards a civilian in Benin City, the bustling capital of Edo state. The incident unfolded in the government-reserved area of Benin City, sparking a wave of concern and outrage among the local community.
According to reports, the altercation between the officer and the unidentified youth escalated when the latter reportedly insulted the constable, leading to a tense confrontation that was captured in a viral video. In the footage, the officer can be seen wielding the weapon and issuing threats to individuals within a residential setting, causing alarm and prompting swift action from the authorities.
The Edo State Police Command wasted no time in addressing the situation, with Commissioner Mr. Funsho Adegboye ordering the immediate arrest and initiation of an orderly room trial for the implicated officer. The command’s spokesperson, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the arrest and highlighted the commissioner’s commitment to a thorough investigation into the matter.
In a statement, Nwabuzor revealed that the officer claimed the incident stemmed from an altercation at the NIPCO Petrol Station along Siloko Road, where the civilian allegedly insulted him by calling him a “smelling Policeman.” Subsequently, the officer followed the individual to his residence, leading to the confrontation that was captured on video.
To ensure transparency and accountability, the Commissioner of Police directed the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the X-Squad section to conduct a detailed investigation into the officer’s conduct. Additionally, the officer’s mental health status will be assessed by the command medical officer, and he will be subjected to a disciplinary process known as an orderly room trial.
The incident has sparked concerns about the conduct of law enforcement officers and the need for proper training and oversight to prevent such incidents from reoccurring. The Edo State Police Command remains committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and accountability within its ranks to maintain public trust and confidence in the police force..
