A disturbing incident unfolded at 11.05am on Saturday at the junction of St John’s Walk and Abbeygate Street, leaving a man with serious injuries to his stomach and head. The police swiftly responded to the scene, where they arrested a woman on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. However, their search for a man named Alex Potter, who is believed to be connected to the incident, continues.
Potter, aged 32, is described as having short dark hair and stubble, with ties to the town of Colchester. The victim of the assault was promptly attended to by paramedics from the East of England Ambulance Service and rushed to the hospital for urgent medical care.
Following the altercation, law enforcement authorities conducted thorough investigations in St John’s Green, cordoning off a significant portion of the area. Armed officers were spotted patrolling the vicinity, maintaining a vigilant presence to ensure public safety. Approximately six police officers were deployed to redirect traffic and pedestrians, with a police van stationed to block access to St John’s Green via the A134 Southway.
Residents in the area expressed surprise and concern over the police activity, with one individual telling the Gazette, a sister publication of the Echo, that the imposing police cordon “did not look good.” They remarked on the unexpected nature of the incident, noting that such occurrences are more commonly associated with the town centre.
As the search for Alex Potter intensifies, Essex Police have issued a public appeal for information. A spokesperson for the force stated, “Our enquiries are ongoing, and we are keen to speak to 32-year-old Alex Potter in connection with this incident. If you encounter Alex, we urge you not to approach him and instead dial 999 immediately, quoting incident number 470 of 13 April.”
The community remains on edge as the investigation unfolds, with authorities working diligently to apprehend the suspect and ensure the safety of the public. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story..
