A tragic incident unfolded at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati in Assam, as a student reportedly died by suicide. The heartbreaking news was confirmed by the local police on Friday, April 12, as reported by ANI.
According to the authorities, the young student was discovered lifeless in his hostel room on Wednesday, April 10. The Superintendent of Police for Kamrup, Ranjan Bhuyan, revealed that the student’s body was found hanging inside his room at Dihing hostel.
In a sorrowful statement, IIT Guwahati expressed deep regret over the loss, stating, “It is with deep regret that IIT Guwahati shares the unfortunate news of the death of a male student on campus on April 10, 2024.” The institute extended their heartfelt condolences to the grieving family and assured that they are providing necessary support during this challenging time.
The institute also disclosed that the police had launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident. “The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident. Our thoughts are with the grieving family,” the institute stated.
The deceased student has been identified as Saurabh, a student in the Computer Science Department, as per the PTI report. In a bid to respect the privacy of the deceased student, college authorities have requested the media to exercise discretion while reporting on the incident.
Following the completion of post-mortem and legal formalities, the student’s body has been entrusted to his parents for transport to his hometown in Samastipur, Bihar, informed the SP.
