A tragic incident unfolded on Interstate 5 in Chula Vista early on Wednesday morning, resulting in the loss of two lives. The collision, which occurred around 3:20 a.m. near Palomar Street, involved a Honda Civic driven by a 67-year-old woman travelling in the wrong direction on the freeway at speeds between 80 and 90 miles per hour.
The wrong-way Honda collided with a Dodge Challenger being driven by a 16-year-old boy from Imperial Beach, leading to a devastating outcome. The impact caused the Dodge to catch fire, resulting in the tragic deaths of both drivers. The young driver of the Dodge was identified as Ryder Shoup, a 10th-grade student at Mar Vista High School.
In a heartfelt letter shared by the Sweetwater Union High School District, Principal of Mar Vista High School expressed the deep sorrow felt by the school community over the loss of Ryder Shoup. Describing Ryder as a kind and active student with a memorable smile, the principal highlighted his participation in the football program and his role as a lifeguard in the community.
The school has made counseling and psychological support available to students to help them cope with the loss of their fellow classmate. Additionally, a GoFundMe page has been set up to support Ryder Shoup’s family during this difficult time.
As investigations into the tragic crash continue, a toxicology report is awaited from the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine if alcohol or drugs played a role in the incident.
The loss of young Ryder Shoup has deeply impacted the Mar Vista High School community, leaving a void that will be felt by all who knew him. The tragic events of that fateful morning serve as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the devastating consequences that can arise from reckless driving. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of both individuals involved in this heartbreaking incident..
