The Leon County Sheriff’s Office is currently conducting an investigation into an “in-custody death” following the tragic discovery of a 43-year-old woman found unresponsive in a cell at the Leon County Detention Facility on Friday morning. The incident occurred around 2:43 a.m. when the woman, identified as Rachel Reeve by LCSO, was brought to the jail after receiving medical clearance from a local hospital, as stated in an agency news release.
Reeve had been arrested on outstanding warrants related to inhaling/ingesting a harmful substance and four failure to appear for possession of a controlled substance charges, according to LCSO officials. Due to concerns about the inmate’s safety, she was placed under direct observation as she had made threatening statements about self-harm.
In a distressing turn of events, at approximately 6:49 a.m., a correctional officer witnessed the inmate lying down on the floor inside her cell. Concerned for her well-being, the officer promptly entered the cell to check on Reeve, only to find her unresponsive. Lifesaving measures were immediately initiated and continued until Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived. Despite efforts to revive her, Reeve was pronounced deceased at a local hospital.
The Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to ascertain the cause and circumstances surrounding Reeve’s untimely demise. Meanwhile, the sheriff’s office affirms that it is adhering to its established protocol by launching an internal investigation into the incident.
This unfortunate incident comes after a similar occurrence last year when a 25-year-old man was found unresponsive in his cell and later pronounced dead at a local hospital. The sheriff’s office had determined that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
In 2022, the Leon County Detention Facility experienced a troubling spate of three inmate suicides, marking the first time in 27 years that such tragic events had occurred within a single year. These incidents have raised significant questions and concerns about the safety and well-being of inmates within the facility..
