SAN DIEGO — Tragedy struck in South County as two lives were lost in a horrific wrong-way freeway crash. The victims have been identified as Ryder Shoup, a 16-year-old high school student from Imperial Beach, and Eileen Crawford, a 67-year-old woman from San Diego.
The fatal collision occurred in the early hours of Wednesday morning on southbound Interstate 5, just north of Palomar Street, according to the California Highway Patrol. Reports indicate that Crawford was driving a Honda Civic in the wrong direction, heading northbound in the southbound lanes. The exact entry point onto the freeway remains under investigation by the CHP.
Prior to the collision, there were reports of an errant driver travelling in the wrong direction on I-5 south, near Camino De La Plaza. While it is not confirmed if these reports were related to Crawford and her vehicle, three minutes after the initial call, her Honda Civic collided with the Dodge Challenger driven by Ryder Shoup. Tragically, both vehicles caught fire, and both drivers were trapped inside, succumbing to their injuries at the scene.
Ryder Shoup, a dedicated student at Mar Vista High School, was not only a football player but also a valued member of the community as a lifeguard. Described as a kind and vibrant 10th-grade student with an unforgettable smile, his untimely passing has left a profound impact on those who knew him. Additionally, a GoFundMe campaign has been set up to support his family, highlighting his infectious smile and the positive influence he had on everyone around him.
On the other hand, Eileen Crawford, a neighbour of Francisco Beltran, had been battling cancer and undergoing radiation treatments. The sudden loss of her life has left a void in the lives of those who knew her, adding to the sorrow felt by the community.
The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of wrong-way driving on freeways, prompting calls for increased awareness and prevention measures to avoid such devastating outcomes in the future. As the investigation continues, the families and friends of Ryder Shoup and Eileen Crawford mourn the loss of their loved ones and seek solace in cherished memories..
