A tragic multi-state crime spree that started in Dubuque County, Iowa, and ended in Dane County, Wisconsin, has left three people dead. The incident began with the killing of 32-year-old Tana Poppe in Iowa, who left behind two children, a 13-year-old and a 5-month-old.
The chain of events unfolded when the infant was dropped off at a home in the Town of Dunn in Dane County by a male and female suspect. The suspects were later identified as Poppe’s 13-year-old daughter and 38-year-old Alexander C. Grunke from Middleton. The duo engaged in a high-speed chase through multiple jurisdictions, firing rounds at authorities along the way.
Sheriff Kalvin Barrett revealed that the suspects’ vehicle eventually came to a halt after hitting spike strips in the Town of Albion. The 13-year-old girl fled into the woods, while Grunke began shooting at a nearby home before barricading himself in the basement with a woman and two children inside. Thankfully, deputies were able to evacuate the family unharmed.
Despite efforts to establish communication with Grunke, he remained unresponsive and was eventually found deceased with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Tragically, the 13-year-old girl was also discovered dead in the nearby woods, under circumstances that remain unclear. Fortunately, no deputies or the 5-month-old infant were injured during the ordeal.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the tragic events that unfolded during this harrowing crime spree that spanned multiple states.
