A shocking incident unfolded in Brenham, Texas, as a Texas semitrailer driver took drastic measures after his renewal for a commercial driver’s license was rejected. The driver, identified as Clenard Parker, 42, rammed a stolen 18-wheeler through the front of a public safety building, resulting in one fatality and injuring 13 others, authorities reported on Friday.
The intentional crash into the single-story brick building off a highway in Brenham, a rural town outside of Houston, caused chaos and devastation. Debris littered the parking lot, and a gaping hole was left in the entrance. The red semitrailer, which was hauling materials on a flatbed, sustained significant damage in the crash.
According to Brenham Mayor Atwood Kenjura, after the initial impact, the driver reversed the truck with the intent to cause further damage before being apprehended. Kenjura expressed deep sorrow over the senseless tragedy that unfolded.
Following the incident, Parker was extracted from the vehicle by authorities at the Texas Department of Public Safety office. While Parker was taken into custody, specific charges he would face were not disclosed at the time.
Prior to the crash, Parker had been informed by office staff that his renewal for a commercial driver’s license would not be approved, as stated by Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Justin Ruiz. The reason for the rejection was not elaborated upon.
Although one employee was briefly trapped after the crash, no serious injuries were reported among the staff at the driver’s license office, according to Republican state Sen. Lois Kolkhorst. Emergency services responded swiftly, with two individuals airlifted to a hospital in Bryan, one to Houston, three transported to local hospitals briefly, and eight others treated on-site.
An increased police presence was observed around the affected building, and motorists were advised to avoid the area. Brenham, with a population of approximately 19,000 residents, is situated about 80 miles west of Houston, offering a glimpse into the rural landscape where the incident occurred.
The Texas Department of Public Safety, a significant state law enforcement entity, oversees various operations, including the issuance of driver’s licenses. The agency’s extensive reach spans the state, encompassing troopers involved in border security efforts and the renowned Texas Rangers, the state’s premier criminal investigators.
