San Diego police have made significant progress in the case of the assault and subsequent death of a man late last month in the Gaslamp Quarter neighborhood. The incident, which occurred on March 21, involved the assault of a homeless man in the 900 block of 4th Avenue. Initially thought to have non-life-threatening injuries, the victim, identified as Charles Hughes, sadly passed away on March 29 as a result of blunt force trauma to his head.
Following an extensive investigation, the San Diego Police Department’s Homicide Unit identified two suspects in connection with the case. Ashley Bonk, 28, of Chula Vista, and a 17-year-old female, whose identity is being protected due to her status as a minor, have been arrested in connection with the assault and subsequent death of Charles Hughes.
Bonk was located and apprehended on Monday near the 1200 block of Park Boulevard and has been booked into Las Colinas County Jail on a charge of murder. The 17-year-old suspect was found on Wednesday in the 1100 block of C Street and was taken into custody without incident. She will be booked into San Diego County Juvenile Hall also on a charge of murder.
