An Afghan national suspected of aiding hundreds of illegal migrants in their entry into Hungary from Serbia has been apprehended by authorities in Hungary on charges of human trafficking. The Standby Police’s National Bureau of Investigation (KR NNI) reported that the man, identified as N. Bismilah, was detained by Serbian police in a joint international operation and transferred to investigators from the Szeged Branch of the NNI at the Röszke Border Crossing Point in southern Hungary on April 2.
According to the KR NNI, the Afghan man allegedly operated as part of a criminal organization with several yet unidentified accomplices. The group reportedly had hierarchically assigned tasks and avoided the use of mobile phones, opting instead to cover their faces with scarves and masks. They exhibited aggression towards patrols, using stones and sticks to deter authorities, as reported by police.hu.
Furthermore, the Afghan man and his associates were said to have caused damage to a temporary security barrier in Ásotthalom to aid migrant passage. They dismantled barbed wire and obscured it with cloth and blankets, while also providing ladders and signage to help migrants navigate the fence.
The man’s identification was made possible through the analysis of border surveillance camera footage and collaboration with Serbian authorities, leading to the issuance of an international arrest warrant by the Szeged District Court and his subsequent arrest in Belgrade. The Investigative Prosecution Office of Szeged has initiated proceedings against the man for violence against an official.
Additionally, the KR NNI reported successful apprehensions based on two other European Arrest Warrants related to human trafficking cases in Germany and the Netherlands. A Syrian citizen was extradited to Hungary by German authorities on March 19, while Dutch authorities handed over a Ukrainian citizen on March 28. Both suspects are now under investigation by the KR NNI following their arrests.
The incident sheds light on the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in combating human trafficking and illegal migration across borders. The collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies in different countries are crucial in addressing such criminal activities and ensuring the safety and security of borders. The arrest of the Afghan man serves as a significant development in the fight against human trafficking in the region..
