A suspect has been taken into custody following the shooting and injuring of an Arlington firefighter during a welfare check at an apartment complex. Demetric Brooks, aged 27, has been booked into the Tarrant County jail on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The bail amount has not been disclosed, and no immediate response has been received from his listed attorney.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday at an apartment complex located in the 400 block of Bardin Greene Drive near East Bardin Road in Arlington. Police and fire officials responded to a call from a concerned resident who reported hearing children crying and calling for their mother to wake up. Upon arrival, officers attempted to make contact for over five minutes, with no response from inside the apartment. Despite announcing themselves as police 17 times, they received no answer.
Due to the audible sounds of distress coming from within, the officers made the decision to force entry into the apartment. During this process, a single shot was fired from inside, striking one of the firefighters at the door. Following the gunshot, everyone inside the apartment, including a man, a woman, and two children, was instructed to exit. The male individual was detained by police and questioned as a suspect in the shooting.
Fortunately, the incident did not escalate further, with no additional shots fired and no further injuries reported. The injured firefighter, identified as Brady Weaver, was promptly transported to a hospital with serious injuries. As of Friday, he was reported to be in a stable and alert condition. Arlington Fire Chief Bret Stidham provided updates on Weaver’s condition, stating that he was in good spirits despite facing a long road to recovery.
Weaver, a six-year veteran of the Arlington Fire Department, works on a squad that responds to medical calls and wellness checks. Stidham requested the community’s support in praying for Weaver’s recovery, along with his family and colleagues in the fire department. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by first responders in the line of duty..
