A man has been taken into custody and is currently being held at Weld County Jail following an incident at a Walmart store where he allegedly threatened an employee with a knife after being confronted about stealing items. The suspect, identified as Jeremy Velazco, aged 35, is facing charges of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon and felony menacing with a deadly weapon.
The altercation took place on the evening of February 28th at the Walmart located on 23rd Avenue in Greeley. Police were called to the scene after receiving reports of a theft in progress. According to witnesses, Velazco was seen concealing merchandise under his coat by a security employee who was patrolling the store.
Upon being approached by the asset protection employee and questioned about the hidden items, Velazco reportedly brandished a knife with a six-inch blade and a green handle. He then threatened to kill the employee before attempting to leave the store without paying for the stolen goods. The employee, fearing for his life, backed away and instructed Velazco to leave.
Surveillance footage captured the entire incident, showing Velazco hiding items under his coat and wielding the knife as he made his way towards the exit. The stolen items were later identified to be worth $31.88. It was also revealed that Velazco had been previously banned from all Walmart properties due to past encounters with law enforcement.
The following day, Velazco was apprehended by Greeley police while riding a bike in the 1200 block of Ninth Street. He was taken into custody without any further incident and is scheduled to appear for a disposition hearing at Weld District Court on April 2nd.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of both employees and customers at the Walmart store in Greeley. Police are urging individuals to report any suspicious activity or behavior to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
