Indian Institutes of Technology-Guwahati Student Detained for Alleged Links with ISIS
An alarming incident unfolded in the Hajo area near Guwahati, where a student of the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology-Guwahati was detained by the Assam Police after allegedly pledging allegiance to the terrorist organisation Islamic State. The student in question, identified as Touseef Ali Farooqui, was apprehended with the assistance of locals on a fateful Saturday evening.
The Director General of Police, GP Singh, took to social media to confirm the detention of the student, who was reportedly intercepted “while travelling”. The student has been charged under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, as per reports from the police. The Unlawful Activities Prevention Act prohibits any association with the Islamic State and its affiliated groups within India.
Investigation and Discovery
Additional Superintendent of Police, Kalyan Kumar Pathak, revealed that the investigation was triggered by an email received from the student himself, where he purportedly declared his intention to join the terrorist group. The authorities at IIT-Guwahati were promptly alerted when the student was reported missing and his phone turned off.
Hailing from Delhi’s Okhla, the student was in the fourth year of his academic pursuit. Pathak disclosed that following initial interrogation, the student was taken to the Special Task Force office for further questioning. A significant discovery was made in the student’s hostel room, where a black flag resembling that of ISIS was found.
Ongoing Investigation and Recent Arrests
The police are diligently examining the seized items and probing the motives behind the email sent by the student. While the student has provided some information, specifics are being withheld at this time. The arrest of Farooqui comes shortly after the apprehension of Haris Farooqi alias Harish Ajmal Farukhi, the alleged head of the Islamic State in India, and his associate Anurag Singh alias Rehan in Assam’s Dhubri district.
