The recent tragedy in Sangrur district, Punjab, where 21 people lost their lives due to the consumption of spurious liquor, has sparked outrage and condemnation from various quarters. Union Minister Anurag Thakur did not mince his words as he launched a scathing attack on Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for his perceived inaction in the face of this tragedy.
Thakur criticized Mann for allegedly prioritizing politics over the welfare of his constituents, accusing him of being more concerned about protecting Arvind Kejriwal than addressing the pressing issue of illicit liquor in his state. The Union Minister’s remarks have ignited a heated debate on the role of political leaders in ensuring the safety and well-being of the public.
The death toll from the suspected consumption of spurious liquor in Sangrur district has now risen to 21, prompting Punjab Police to set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter. The SIT, comprising senior police officials, has already made several arrests in connection with the sale of illicit alcohol in the region.
Among those arrested are individuals involved in the manufacturing and distribution of spurious liquor, including Soma Kaur, Rahul alias Sanju, and Pardeep Singh alias Babi. The police have seized large quantities of illicit alcohol and equipment used in its production from the suspects, indicating the scale of the operation.
According to ADGP Gurinder Singh Dhillon, around 23 people have been hospitalized after consuming spurious liquor, with three FIRs already filed in the case. The authorities are taking swift action to apprehend all those responsible for this tragedy, with a total of 10 suspects identified and eight already in custody.
In response to the incident, the Election Commission of India has requested a detailed report from Punjab’s Chief Secretary and DGP through the state’s CEO. The tragic events in Sangrur have highlighted the need for stricter enforcement of laws against the production and sale of illicit liquor to prevent similar tragedies in the future..
