In a tragic turn of events, the recent homicide victims linked to a prison escape in Idaho have been identified as two elderly men, aged 83 and 72. The Nez Pearce County Coroner’s Office and Clearwater County Coroner’s Office confirmed the identities of the deceased individuals.
James L Mauney, 83, was found deceased outside of Leland, Idaho. Hailing from the Juliaetta area, Mr Mauney was walking his dogs when he encountered the fugitives, Skylar Meade, 31, and Nicholas Umphenour. The two men then reportedly took Mr Mauney and his dogs and drove eastbound in a 2019 silver Chrysler Pacifica.
Authorities discovered Mr Mauney’s body near an abandoned vehicle linked to the crime, indicating a tragic end to the encounter. It is believed that Mr Mauney did not know the suspects prior to the incident, adding a layer of mystery to the tragic events.
Meanwhile, the second victim, Gerald “Don” Henderson, 72, was found at his residence outside Orofino. Mr Henderson succumbed to an apparent gunshot wound, with further details pending an autopsy. Investigators found Mr Mauney’s dogs at the scene, along with a pair of shackles believed to have been left behind by Meade.
While it is suspected that Mr Henderson had some prior acquaintance with the suspects, the exact nature of their relationship remains unclear. Fortunately, Mr Mauney’s dogs were returned unharmed to his family members, providing a small silver lining in the midst of the tragedy.
The Boise, Idaho Police Department recently announced the capture of Meade and Umphenour following their escape from custody. The dramatic events unfolded as Meade broke out of prison while receiving treatment at Saint Alphonsus hospital in Boise. In a violent confrontation, Umphenour attacked correctional officers, leading to a tense manhunt lasting over 24 hours.
Meade, who has been incarcerated since October 2016, was serving time for aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and had a history of prior convictions. His capture marked the end of a dangerous escapade that left three officers wounded in the line of duty.
As the authorities continue to investigate the tragic events surrounding the prison escape and subsequent homicides, the community remains in shock over the senseless violence that has shaken the quiet town of Idaho..
