A man has been apprehended and formally charged in connection with a tragic hit-and-run incident that took place last year in Boone County, Kentucky. The incident occurred at approximately 5:27 a.m. on July 2, 2023, when authorities received reports of a collision with injuries near the 10000 block of Dixie Highway in Florence, a bustling city in northern Kentucky.
Upon arrival at the scene, responding deputies discovered a man lying in the grass adjacent to the roadway, later identified as 38-year-old Simon Aguilar, along with a severely damaged bicycle. An investigation revealed that Aguilar had been cycling alongside Dixie Highway in Florence when he was fatally struck by a Ford F-150. The driver of the vehicle, 28-year-old Jeovany Alexander Mendez, fled the scene and abandoned the truck just south of the crash site. Mendez was subsequently identified as the prime suspect in the hit-and-run incident, leading to the issuance of an arrest warrant by law enforcement.
The United States Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force took charge of the pursuit to apprehend Mendez, who had evaded capture by relocating to various states, including Ohio, Tennessee, and North Carolina, despite having familial connections in Northern Kentucky. Recent information received by the USMS indicated that Mendez had returned to the area and was presently located on Dream Street in Florence. Acting on this intelligence, USMS agents intercepted Mendez as he attempted to leave a motel parking lot with his fiancée and children in an SUV.
During the subsequent arrest, authorities discovered that Mendez was in possession of falsified identification documents. His fiancée, 27-year-old Guisela Lopez Gomez, was also taken into custody after it was revealed that she too possessed fraudulent Social Security cards and identification materials. Mendez faces multiple charges, including reckless homicide, leaving the scene of an accident, possession of forged instruments, and possession of an open container of alcohol in connection with the hit-and-run incident. Additionally, he has been charged with identity theft and possession of forged documents. Mendez is currently detained at the Boone County Detention Center on an Immigration Detainer.
Gomez, on the other hand, is facing charges of identity theft and possession of forged instruments. She was initially held at the Boone County Detention Center but has since been released on a $2,500 cash bond. The community awaits further developments in this tragic case as justice is sought for the victim and accountability is upheld for the accused individuals..
