Popular Kannywood actress, Amal Umar, found herself in hot water as she was brought before Magistrate Court No. 24 in the Gyadi-Gyadi area of Kano metropolis. The charges laid against her were serious – attempted bribery involving a hefty sum of N250,000, allegedly offered to a police officer known as ASP Salisu Bujama from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Zone 1 headquarters in Kano State.
The whole saga began when a complaint was lodged by Alhaji Yusuf Adamu through his legal representative, H.I. Dederi, to the Assistant Inspector General (AIG), Umar Mohd Sanda, on August 18, 2022. The complaint detailed how Amal Umar’s boyfriend, Ramadan Inuwa, was involved in an alleged financial misappropriation amounting to a staggering N40 million in his cell phone business. Shockingly, investigations revealed that a substantial sum of N13 million was transferred to the bank account of the Kannywood actress by Inuwa.
CSP Bashir Muhammed, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Police Force, Zone 1, Kano, confirmed that Amal Umar was summoned for questioning and later granted bail. However, she was prohibited from leaving in a car reportedly purchased by her boyfriend. During questioning, the actress admitted that the funds in her bank account belonged to her partner, although she claimed that only N8 million was transferred to her.
In a bid to halt further police investigations against her, Amal Umar sought legal intervention by approaching the High Court of Kano State. The court’s decision temporarily restrained the police from pursuing the case against the actress. This pause in the investigation allegedly emboldened Amal Umar to attempt to bribe ASP Salisu Bujama, the Police investigator handling the matter.
The attempted bribery was swiftly intercepted by the Police, who promptly detained the actress with incriminating evidence. As a result, she was arraigned before the Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday to face the consequences of her actions. The alleged offence committed by the Kannywood actress falls under Section 118 of the Penal Code, which expressly prohibits the bribery of a police officer.
The incident has sparked a wave of controversy and debate within the entertainment industry, with many questioning the integrity of public figures and the consequences of their actions. As the case unfolds, all eyes are on the judiciary to ensure justice is served without bias or favouritism..
