Atchison County, Kansas – Authorities in Atchison County are currently investigating a Kansas felon who was apprehended after a dramatic chase and scooter crash earlier this week. The incident unfolded shortly after 11 a.m. on Tuesday, when a police officer attempted to pull over a Suzuki motor scooter in the vicinity of 17th and Kansas Avenue in Atchison, as reported by Police Chief Mike Wilson.
The scooter driver, later identified as 31-year-old Christopher Edwards, made the decision to flee from the scene, leading officers on a high-speed pursuit that spanned several blocks before ultimately culminating in a crash. Following the crash, Edwards abandoned the scooter and attempted to escape on foot, prompting officers to give chase.
In a desperate bid to evade capture, Edwards sought refuge in an occupied residence located in the 1400 block of Atchison Street. Ignoring the rights of the homeowners, he forcibly entered the property through the front door, pushing aside several residents in his reckless attempt to flee through the back entrance. However, law enforcement personnel were able to track him down shortly thereafter, discovering him hiding beneath a porch in the 1400 block of Santa Fe.
Despite sustaining minor injuries in the scooter crash, Edwards was taken into custody and subsequently transported to Amberwell Hospital for a thorough examination. Following treatment and release, he was promptly transferred to the County Jail, where he is presently being detained on a litany of charges. These include fleeing and attempting to elude, various traffic violations, interference with law enforcement, battery, criminal trespass, and criminal possession of a firearm.
During the course of their investigation, police recovered a handgun from the scooter, shedding light on Edwards’ troubling criminal history. Records from the Kansas Department of Corrections indicate that he has prior convictions for a sex crime and criminal possession of a weapon.
The community remains on edge as this unsettling incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by individuals with a disregard for the law. As the investigation continues, authorities are working tirelessly to ensure that justice is served and that the safety and security of the residents of Atchison County are upheld..
