A man from New York has found himself in hot water after a routine traffic stop on Interstate 85 in Franklin County. The incident occurred on February 8 when a deputy spotted a silver 2021 Ford Edge speeding down the southbound lanes at a staggering 112mph. The driver, identified as 26-year-old Vincent Kyle Guerra from Staten Island, was pulled over for the speeding violation.
Sheriff Steve Thomas stated that the deputy questioned Guerra about the presence of any weapons, large sums of cash, Marijuana, Cocaine, or Methamphetamine in the vehicle. When asked for consent to search the car, Guerra refused. Subsequently, the deputy called for backup from a K-9 unit and conducted a status check on the vehicle and driver.
Upon arrival, another deputy and their K-9 partner performed a free air sniff of the vehicle, which resulted in a positive alert for drugs. Guerra attempted to distance himself from the situation by claiming the vehicle was not his and denying any involvement in the presence of illicit substances.
During the search, officers noticed several air fresheners strategically placed in the vehicle and no luggage in sight. The discovery of two black plastic baggies underneath the spare tire in the back hatch led to the unveiling of four large pre-packaged bags containing a green leafy substance suspected to be marijuana, THC gummies, and a vacuum-sealed bag of US currency.
Guerra was promptly arrested and taken to the Franklin County Detention Center, where he was charged with possession of a Schedule II drug, speeding, and possession, manufacture, distribution, or sale of controlled substances. His bond was set at $10,800, which he posted the following day.
This incident serves as a reminder of the diligence and thoroughness of law enforcement in cracking down on illegal activities, even during routine traffic stops. The cooperation between deputies and K-9 units played a crucial role in the discovery of the illicit items in Guerra’s vehicle, highlighting the importance of thorough investigations in maintaining public safety..
