A man named James Rucker, aged 53, was apprehended by Newport Police in Tennessee, eight days after allegedly evading Jefferson City Police and accumulating several warrants. The arrest took place on Sunday when Officer Justin Shelton of the Newport Police Department spotted Rucker during a routine patrol on Old Knoxville Highway. Rucker was seen alongside other males near a vacant residence, and upon questioning, he provided a false name, which was later revealed to be his alias.
The warrants against Rucker stemmed from an incident on February 17th, when Jefferson City Police responded to a theft at Walmart. Rucker, the suspect, reportedly fled the scene in a black Jeep at high speed, eventually colliding with a patrol car. Fortunately, the officer involved in the crash did not sustain any injuries. Subsequently, the abandoned vehicle was discovered by officers from the White Pine Police Department at Exit 4 off I-81.
Following the incident, Jefferson County issued warrants for Rucker’s arrest on charges including aggravated assault, assault on a police officer, felony reckless endangerment, theft of property, leaving the scene of an accident, and driving with a revoked license. Upon Rucker’s apprehension in Newport, he was found to be in possession of approximately .58 grams of suspected heroin and a syringe.
In addition to facing charges in Jefferson County, Rucker was also charged in Cocke County with criminal impersonation, possession of a controlled substance, and unlawful drug paraphernalia as a result of his arrest in Newport. The Cocke County Sheriff’s Office disclosed that Rucker’s bond for the charges in their jurisdiction was set at $30,000.
The swift action taken by law enforcement in Newport led to the capture of James Rucker, a fugitive with multiple warrants against him. The collaborative efforts of various police departments in the area ensured that Rucker was brought to justice for his alleged crimes. This incident serves as a reminder of the dedication and vigilance exhibited by law enforcement officers in safeguarding the community from individuals who pose a threat to public safety..
