The tragic incident that unfolded in Southeast Edmonton on Saturday evening has left the community in shock and mourning. The victim, identified as Kassandra Gartner of Fort Saskatchewan, was struck and killed by a U-Haul truck during a police pursuit. Mounties had attempted to stop the U-Haul after it reportedly rammed a police cruiser, leading to a chase that ended in tragedy.
Kassandra Gartner, a 45-year-old beloved wife, mother, sister, daughter, and friend, was not involved in the police pursuit. After hitting a tire deflation device laid by the Mounties, she got out of her SUV and was fatally struck by the U-Haul. Her family released a heartfelt statement on Monday, expressing their profound sadness and remembering Kassandra as a pillar in the community.
Fort Saskatchewan Mayor Gale Katchur also paid tribute to Gartner’s contributions as the executive director of the Fort Saskatchewan Food Bank. Katchur described her as a dynamic individual who saw the need for the food bank to expand and serve the community more effectively. Gartner’s dedication and compassion were evident in her work, leaving a lasting impact on those around her.
Amanda Bell, president of the food bank, lauded Gartner as the heart and soul of their mission, emphasizing her unwavering commitment to serving the community. The food bank is determined to carry on Kassandra’s legacy and continue providing vital services to those in need.
Gartner leaves behind a husband and three young daughters, further deepening the sense of loss felt by her family and the community. A vigil is planned for Thursday evening at city hall in Fort Saskatchewan to honour her memory and support her loved ones during this difficult time.
As the search for the driver of the U-Haul continues, the Edmonton Police Service is urging anyone with information to come forward. The suspect, described as approximately 5’11” with specific clothing details, remains at large. The Edmonton Police Service is working tirelessly to apprehend the individual responsible for this tragic incident and bring them to justice.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is conducting an investigation into the use of the tire deflation device that led to Kassandra Gartner’s death. ASIRT’s mandate is to thoroughly examine cases involving Alberta police that result in serious injury or loss of life, ensuring accountability and transparency in such situations..
