In a shocking turn of events, an Uber driver in Florida has found himself in hot water after attempting to peddle illicit substances to undercover narcotics investigators during the Florida Narcotics Officers’ Association Annual Conference in Miramar Beach, Walton County. The driver, identified as 52-year-old John Alcott, was caught red-handed trying to sell Psilocybin mushrooms and Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD) to detectives from the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident unfolded when detectives, who had taken an Uber ride with Alcott, noticed a strong smell of marijuana emanating from his vehicle. Upon engaging in conversation with the driver, Alcott brazenly offered to sell them Psilocybin mushrooms, opening his glove compartment to reveal a sizable bag of the illicit fungi. The detectives quickly declined the offer and alerted the Walton County Sheriff’s Office, who devised a plan to conduct an undercover sting operation the following day.
During the subsequent drug transaction, Alcott sold investigators a significant quantity of Psilocybin mushrooms, Psilocybin mushroom capsules, and LSD for a hefty sum of $1,000. Shockingly, Alcott even mentioned his willingness to ship additional supplies to the detectives. In a coordinated effort between the Walton County Sheriff’s Office and the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office, the investigators maintained contact with Alcott over the course of several months to gather further evidence.
The investigation revealed that Alcott’s Uber services primarily operated between Destin and Panama City Beach, with plans to return to the Miramar Beach area in February for a vacation. Acting on this information, the undercover detective set up another meeting with Alcott to purchase a larger quantity of drugs in exchange for $5,000. However, before the transaction could take place, Alcott was apprehended by law enforcement officers and taken into custody for warrants related to the initial undercover purchase.
Subsequent searches of Alcott’s vehicle uncovered the stash of mushrooms and LSD intended for sale. Walton County Sheriff Michael Adkinson expressed concern over the case, highlighting the alarming trend of individuals using ride-sharing services to conduct illegal activities, especially considering the prevalence of teenagers and young adults utilizing such services in the area.
Alcott now faces a slew of charges, including two counts of selling hallucinogens, trafficking in LSD, possession of hallucinogens with intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia, and two counts of using a two-way communication device in the commission of a felony. He was granted a $15,000 bond and subsequently released from the Walton County Jail..
