The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, Feb. 22, near the intersection of E. Broadway and S. Brown Ave.
Upon receiving reports of a single-vehicle collision, emergency crews rushed to the scene. What they encountered was a vehicle that had collided with a telephone pole, causing live power lines to come crashing down, as well as striking two trees before coming to a halt in the eastbound lanes of Broadway Blvd. The situation took a dangerous turn when the engine compartment ignited into flames, posing a grave threat to the trapped driver inside.
A brave passerby attempted to extinguish the fire but was unsuccessful in their efforts. It was then that Commander Michael Elwood from the Sedalia Police Department arrived on the scene. With quick thinking and unwavering determination, Commander Elwood managed to force open the severely damaged driver’s door and cut away the airbags to reach the unconscious 23-year-old woman trapped inside.
With the help of Officer Alex Stevenson, Commander Elwood successfully extricated the driver from the burning vehicle and carried her to safety. The Sedalia Fire Department swiftly arrived on the scene and managed to extinguish the raging flames, preventing further damage and harm.
