Tragedy Strikes in the Alberta Rockies
Tragedy struck in the picturesque backcountry near Castle Mountain ski resort in the Alberta Rockies, close to the British Columbia border, as one man lost his life after being buried by an avalanche while snowmobiling. The Alberta RCMP confirmed the heartbreaking news, revealing that the victim was a 46-year-old man from Magrath, Alta.
According to reports, the man was snowmobiling with another adult male and two children on a fateful Saturday afternoon when disaster struck. An avalanche hit the group at around 1 p.m. MT, leading to a frantic situation where the two children managed to escape with one of the adults, while the other was tragically buried under the snow.
Search and Rescue Efforts
The Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek RCMP were informed of the avalanche incident at 5:22 p.m. that day by the surviving adult male. However, due to the dwindling daylight, a full-scale search-and-rescue operation could not be initiated immediately. It was decided to commence the search at first light the following day.
On Sunday, a dedicated team comprising members of the Pincher Creek RCMP, the Southwestern Alberta Regional Search and Rescue, a K9 unit from Fernie Search and Rescue, and Alberta Conservation launched a thorough search effort. Their valiant efforts paid off when they located and recovered the body of the missing snowmobiler just before 1:30 p.m.
Previous Incidents in the Area
This unfortunate incident is not the first time that the area near Castle Mountain has been marred by avalanche-related tragedies. Just earlier this month, a man found himself stranded in an out-of-bounds area at Castle Mountain Resort after being caught in an avalanche. It serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable and dangerous nature of the backcountry terrain, urging visitors to exercise caution and heed all safety warnings.
