In a tragic turn of events, a man in Mason County, West Virginia, is facing murder charges after the body of his girlfriend was discovered during a welfare check by sheriff’s deputies.
Discovery of the Body
On February 23, deputies from the Mason County Sheriff’s Office made a horrifying discovery inside a camper located along Belle Road in Point Pleasant. The body, later identified as Sara Smith, 54, of Point Pleasant, was found wrapped in a blanket in the bedroom with severe head trauma.
Details of the Incident
According to a criminal complaint, a woman who was interviewed by troopers revealed that Smith had been involved in a confrontation with her boyfriend, Ryan Keith Marshall, prior to her tragic death. The woman recounted that Marshall had threatened Smith multiple times during the altercation, including making statements like, “You are going to give me those keys whether you are dead or alive.”
During the incident, Marshall is alleged to have stolen a red SUV, leading to further complications in the case.
Arrest and Confession
Following the discovery of Smith’s body, law enforcement agencies including the Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Point Pleasant Police Department, and West Virginia State Police, located and arrested Ryan Marshall. Marshall had active felony warrants out of Mason County Magistrate Court for grand larceny and conspiracy to commit a felony.
During the arrest and reading of his Miranda Rights, Marshall reportedly confessed to shooting Smith in the forehead with a .38 caliber pistol. The incident leading to Smith’s untimely death occurred on February 21, 2024.
Legal Proceedings
Ryan Marshall has been charged with murder and is currently being held at the Western Regional Jail. Further details about the case have not been released to the public.
